The intrigue that surrounds us stems from the glamour of the Pan-Am flying era, but many s stereotypes still linger. All this and more, glossed up in perfect red lipstick and heels, strutting down the runway with a smile. We are responsible for several hundred lives above the clouds and on the ground on every flight. We become a therapist to a nervous flier. The writer in Rome. is an excellent and also famous dating site for the single pilots as well as flight attendants all over the world for what we known that they are travel between different countries or .
Actually, on international long haul, the only Flight Attendants who even interacted with the pilots were the most senior working First Class and the pursers, most of whom were in relationships. They have different layovers at different hotels and the rules work all differently for them. They negotiate their union contracts separately so usually, every flight we worked, we had a different cockpit. Most of the gay guys actually had partners outside the industry as a rule.
There was also a “culture clash”. Many of us were minorities, racial, religious, etc. The pilots were usually white, Middle America, hard working, ex-military guys. While I trusted them without hesitation, I didn’t share some of their political and social views so I found myself keeping a polite, professional distance. I understand that Flight Attendants who work short-haul or domestic flights do meet single pilots starting out their careers.
Also, there are more women and minority pilots, not necessarily ex-military although this will always be an avenue into this career. Especially charter, which are smaller companies, aircraft and crews who stay together more often.

Quoting Sushka Thread starter: One said that chief pilots would never hire an ex flight attendant. I’ve worked with any number of pilots who used to be a flight attendant. Some times they got on with the same airline, some times they had to move to another, but that was only a matter of the other airline hiring at the moment when their own was not. I don’t know of any airline with any policy that would make it difficult.
Nor do I know of any that make it easier than from ‘the outside’ so at very least you’d know people and you’d know the corporate culture. Knowing people can go either way. If there is just one person who takes a dislike to you, or is envious of your opportunity or any such thing it can prevent your being hired as a pilot. I had a friend who drove the crew bus at one airline while he got his ATP and built up the needed flight hours.
They never did hire him.

In fact, even a guy with limited flirting skills can successfully hook up with a flight attendant that tended to his needs while on the plane. You just have to make sure you remember a few crucial elements of flirting while flying. That cruddy sweat shirt and old jeans you usually wear when you travel are not going to cut it. Try for a cool, casual look, such as dress pants and a dark colored dress shirt.
Remember, you want to look presentable, but not stuffy. What you occupy yourself with during the flight can make a difference in whether or not you hook up with a flight attendant. In case she asks you about it, be ready to answer questions. Strike up a conversation. Start with a smile and a compliment. Ask her how her day is going. Look interested and attentive. Touch her arm if possible. Many flight attendants are overworked and exhausted and will likely appreciate a little harmless flirting.

When did the gay steward become such a common stereotype? Around World War II. As Phil Tiemeyer points out in his book Plane Queer: Labor, Sexuality, and AIDS in the History of Male Flight Attendants , a new book which proved an invaluable resource for this post, the first flight attendants, in the late s and s, were actually men, and were expected to be traditionally masculine. Because of this, early uniforms for crew and pilots were also often military-inspired, featuring stripes, pilot wings, and caps some of these elements persist in uniforms today.
Most Boeing s and s have a secret staircase that leads up to a cabin where pilots and flight attendants can sleep. Some of the planes have a separate area for pilots with reclining chairs and a bathroom, while others have bunk style beds for the crew to grab a few hours of rest.
Aircraft performance[ edit ] The NTSB attempted to reconstruct the aircraft’s performance based on reports from witnesses and survivors. Witnesses reported that the plane attempted to climb at a higher than normal angle, and that the plane rolled from side to side and appeared to be out of control. Engine 3 had separated from the empennage.
Witnesses on the ground claimed that one of the engines was on fire, but although the engine was badly crushed from ground impact, there was no sign of fire or heat damage. Delta officials quickly reacted to questions about the ‘s operating and maintenance condition by pointing out that the original factory engines from when the plane was initially purchased by the airline had been replaced in the last few years by a newer model that ran more quietly and used less fuel.
They also stated that there were no known mechanical or maintenance problems with the plane prior to the flight the vibration reported by passengers was the compressor surging mentioned above. After conducting airplane performance studies, the NTSB determined that the events of Flight could only be explained by the aircraft attempting to take off without its flaps and slats extended to the proper take-off configuration. However, the cockpit voice recorder CVR tapes recorded extensive nonessential conversation, including about the CVR itself and how on Continental Airlines Flight crew discussions were recorded about the dating habits of the flight attendants.
The CVR also showed that prior to takeoff, the flight crew was distracted by chatting with a flight attendant about the upcoming presidential election , drink mixes and various other topics unrelated to the operation of the aircraft. Of the flight crew, the first officer was most actively engaged in these nonessential conversations, with the captain only occasionally joining in.

The Federal Aviation Administration FAA has mandated changes to pilot duty time and rest regulations, in place since the mid s, that must be implemented at all U. Flight Attendant duty time and rest regulations were established in the mid s. These pilot Federal Aviation Regulations FARs signal a significant paradigm shift away from existing pilot duty and rest requirements, which vary for domestic, international and unscheduled flights, for different types of passenger flights, and do not take factors such as start time and time zone crossings into account.
In , the FAA began considering changes to the regulations to enhance safety but its efforts were stymied by airline lobbyists who cited a lack of safety data. Then, in February , the crash of Colgan Air Flight , which killed all 49 people on board and one on the ground, was attributed in part to pilot fatigue and training. The families of the Colgan victims advocated relentlessly and concerns among U.
This, in addition to pressure from Congress and from international aviation regulators who sought science-based flight, duty and rest standards, prompted the FAA administrator to address pilot fatigue in June An FAA working group comprised of fatigue experts, airline representatives and pilot union leaders published a proposed pilot rule in September , and a final rule was published on December 21, with a two-year implementation period.
The new pilot FARs incorporate the latest fatigue science to set different requirements for pilot flight time, duty period and rest based on: The regulation also allows an airline to develop an alternative approach for mitigating pilot fatigue, as long as it is based on scientific data that is validated and continuously monitored by the FAA. This means that pilots could negotiate with management to develop alternate duty and rest schemes that are based on data and subject to FAA approval.
